Direct Primary Care Massachusetts: Help Support Better Access to Care

Dear Patients and Friends,

Direct Primary Care Massachusetts is at a pivotal moment. I wanted to share something important that could have a real impact on how primary care is practiced across our state.

Yesterday, I testified in front of the Joint Committee on Financial Services in support of House Bill 1343 — “An Act Relative to Direct Primary Care.” We’ve been working for nearly eight years to get legislation like this passed, and this year, we’re hopeful it will finally happen.

The Bill Has Two Key Parts

  • Patient Choice: It allows any willing provider—including direct primary care physicians—to refer or order tests for any patient with any insurance, regardless of network restrictions. This is especially important for patients with HMO plans who currently face unnecessary barriers to care.
  • Access to Affordable Medications: It allows doctors to dispense and sell medications directly from their offices, helping lower costs and increase convenience for patients. Right now, Massachusetts is one of only three states in the nation that doesn’t allow this.

Passing this bill would make Direct Primary Care Massachusetts more accessible, affordable, and patient-centered—values at the core of what we do every day.
