Millions of Americans have high blood pressure. You might be one of them. Do you know what your blood pressure should be? Don’t worry, most people don’t.
The guidelines change as new research and evidence emerge. This makes it confusing and frustrating for patients as what was considered good control last month is now too high. (Not fair!) We promise that there are health benefits associated with the changes, we’re not just being mean.
Let’s break down the new guidelines clearly so that you can know where you fall: NORMAL blood pressure is LESS THAN 120/80. ELEVATED blood pressure is between 120-129 TOP number and LESS than 80 bottom number. STAGE 1 HYPERTENSION is 130-139 TOP number and 80-89 BOTTOM number. STAGE 2 HYPERTENSION is GREATER or EQUAL to 140 TOP number and 90 BOTTOM number.
I know it’s a lot to take in. You should partner up with your healthcare provider so that you can form a plan, get your questions answered, and meet your goals.
